This lecture introduces ArtsEquator, a Singapore-based platform that supports and amplifies critical discourse on arts and culture in Southeast Asia. A key initiative is the ArtsEquator Fellowship, which nurtures emerging and mid-career art critics from across the region. As part of this fellowship, the lecture presents the project “Mekong Sci-Fi: A Spiritual Odyssey in the Making.” It explores the emerging sci-fi scene in the Lower Mekong Basin through five films from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, highlighting their cultural significance, narrative diversity, and global potential. Rooted in local cosmologies and histories, the project develops a “Fut◊rity” framework—a conceptual toolkit for scholars and practitioners navigating new storytelling frontiers. Ultimately, it seeks to cultivate a thriving community for Mekong speculative fiction and inspire a new generation of storytellers.
