Artistic Art Histories (in Southeast Asia)

How can artists teach us to be better art historians, and to decolonize our work? How have practice and research been entwined in Southeast Asia’s art histories? How do dogs see paintings? These are some questions which will guide this lecture. This lecture introduces the concept of artistic art histories: artworks in which contemporary artists do art-historical work, and engage with art-historical ideas and information. Nelson proposes the concept of artistic art histories as a companion to the more widespread notion of artistic research. These artworks are thinking and theorizing, and thereby proposing ways of knowing that may contribute to the ongoing decolonizing of art-historical work.
