Unfolding Malaysia: Contemporary Artistic Voices (2010-2025)

Drawing on examples such as Ahmad Fuad Osman’s Enrique de Malacca Memorial Project, the discussion highlights how postmodern strategies of appropriation, parody, and alternative histories informed earlier practices. In the last decade, however, younger Malaysian artists have moved toward diverse approaches, including mark-making, material experimentation, everyday banality, fantasy or sci-fi pop visualizations and their recent engagement with global concerns. Their works reflect expanded global exchanges and shifting art education, often distancing themselves from notions of a singular Malaysian identity. Instead, these practices exemplify a broader engagement with contemporary art discourses while simultaneously negotiating local and global cultural forces.
