Historically, biennales have rarely been established for cultural purposes alone. They often operate as political and economic instruments—intertwined with cultural tourism, urban development, and broader geopolitical ambitions.

In this lecture, Esther LU will introduce two major biennales from last year as case studies, offering insights into their curatorial frameworks and selected artworks. Through this journey, we will explore the multiple “worlds” these Asian biennales seek to construct and reflect on the layered narratives they bring into being.
