The Materialities of Exhibitions and the Reach of Public Programs

Exhibitions are entry points to experience and think about art. How can we endeavor to make them highly sensory and visually tactile; a site where art is palpably felt by audiences and viewers? How might we counter technologies bent on fracking our attention, and even affection, through experiences enabled by art? I will walk you through experiments in exhibition-making, to work around the possibilities and constraints inherent to curatorial projects. After which, I will propose how public programs can anchor exhibitions (often, it’s the other way around) and render them afterlives. Lastly, I will mention skills we might call ‘connoisseurial;’ those we can carry over to our curatorial practices, to help build our visual repertoire and strengthen our ability to make art-historical connections across space and time.
